      CBD and Anxiety
If you've been exploring techniques to reduce stress, youΒ may have found yourself askingΒ βcan CBD help with my anxiety?βΒ
What is Anxiety?
AccordingΒ to the World Health Organization (WHO),Β 1Β in 13Β people around the world live with an anxiety disorder, making them the most common mental health disorder worldwide.
Anxiety disorders are a collection of mental health conditions characterizedΒ by disproportionate worry about future events. A physiological responseΒ occurs in the body which could show up as chest pain, shortness of breath, muscle tension, sleep disturbances, excessive sweating, agitation, restlessness, irritability and difficulty concentrating.Β These symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, schoolwork, and relationships.Β
Not all anxiety is the same and it affects sufferers in differentΒ ways.Β Anxiety disorders include:
- generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is when anxiety is felt about a wide range of situations or issues,
- social anxiety disorder (SAD) β the fearΒ of being negatively judged or rejected in social situations,
- panic disorder β sudden feelings of terror resulting in panic attacks,
- obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) β unwelcomed repetitive thoughts and behavior,
- phobias β an extreme fear triggered by a situation or object; and
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) β anxiety including flashbacks that develop after some kind of traumatic event.Β
ThereΒ isΒ not aΒ βone size fits allβΒ solution forΒ dealing withΒ anxietyΒ due to the complexity of each case.Β Cognitive behavioral therapy or βtalk therapyβ,Β often combined withΒ anti-anxiety medications, areΒ common techniques that help. There can be side effects that accompany these medicationsΒ soΒ someΒ people are seeking natural alternatives such as CBD.Β
AnxietyΒ and the Endocannabinoid System
Our endocannabinoid system (ECS) helps buffer the effects of stress on our bodies. Our ECSΒ playsΒ a significant roleΒ in how we deal with anxiety, fear and stress by keeping our body's systems balanced.
Prolonged exposure to stress can take a tollΒ on ourΒ ECSΒ byΒ compromising theΒ activity of our CB1 receptors,Β whichΒ are involved in how weΒ process emotions.Β Stress also increasesΒ the enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH),Β whichΒ breaks downΒ the endocannabinoid anandamide,Β lowering theΒ levels ofΒ thisΒ βblissΒ molecule".Β Β
When our endocannabinoid system is not workingΒ optimally,Β it can leave usΒ feeling more anxious.Β OneΒ studyΒ foundΒ aΒ relationship betweenΒ lowerΒ levels of anandamide and severity of anxiety.Β The more we learn about the ECS, the moreΒ expansiveΒ itsΒ importanceΒ is.Β
Why isΒ CBD Helpful forΒ Anxiety?
There are several ways that CBD mayΒ helpΒ combat anxiety.Β CBDΒ binds to theΒ CB1Β receptors in the ECS, promoting the creation of new neuronsΒ in the brain's hippocampus, which scientists believe contributes to reducing anxiety.Β
Drug companies are experimenting with reducingΒ FAAH, which willΒ slow the breakdown of the βbliss moleculeβ anandamideΒ for the next great anti-anxiety medication, but CBD does that naturally.Β StudiesΒ have shownΒ CBDΒ has the ability toΒ delayΒ the metabolism of FAAH, keeping anandamide in our system longer.
CBDβsΒ abilityΒ to help with anxiety goes beyond the ECS.Β There have been animal studies that show how CBD interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain. These same serotonin receptors are often the targets for anti-anxiety medication, leadingΒ researchers to suggestΒ that there is substantial evidence to consider using CBD as support for anxiety and everyday stress in humans.Β
How Much CBD Should I Take?
StudiesΒ thatΒ focus on CBD and anxiety tendΒ to use the isolate form of CBD. This makes it difficult to translate the amount used during a study into an applicable amount of full-spectrum CBD forΒ dailyΒ use. What is known is that a much higher doseΒ ofΒ CBDΒ isolate is needed to see desired effects.
Using a smaller dose of full-spectrum CBD (like the kind in Lily Hill's products) has proven effective in other studies. Currently, there are several clinical trials underway which are studying the effectiveness of CBD for anxiety, including one using 25mg full-spectrum CBD capsules.
WithΒ all of that being said, everyoneΒ has a different body chemistry.Β Finding the right dosage for youΒ will take some timeΒ and adjustments. StartingΒ low and slow isΒ recommended.Β See our blog post How to Use CBD Oil for more information on dosage.
Β
Life will always testΒ us but we can continueΒ expand our toolkitΒ forΒ managing anxiety symptoms. New research suggests that CBD could potentially relieve symptoms related to anxiety and stress.Β Adding a full-spectrum CBD product to your arsenalΒ could be aΒ beneficial additionΒ to your routine, especially whenΒ it isΒ part of aΒ plan that includes a healthy diet,Β regular exercise and otherΒ methods of self-care.Β
