Recipe Corner: CBD Golden Milk

The birdsΒ chirpingΒ outsideΒ are a sign that the season isΒ changing and warmer days are to come.Β BUT, it's Vermont andΒ we all knowΒ there'sΒ a chance we may wake up with snow on theΒ ground in May.Β Yes, the days may be gettingΒ warmer,Β but the evenings are still cold.Β Β Lately,Β instead of my normal evening cup of tea,Β I have switched to Golden Milk to warm my bonesΒ and brighten my soulΒ before I drift off to dreamland.Β This delicious beverageΒ isΒ packed with health benefitsΒ and filled to the brim with nutrients.Β

What is Golden Milk?Β

Golden Milk, also known asΒ haldiΒ kaΒ doodh, is an ancient healing remedyΒ whoseΒ origins can be traced back to ancientΒ India,Β where it was (and still is) used in Ayurvedic medicineΒ to help with insomnia, coughs and colds.

Turmeric isΒ the superstar in golden milkΒ and is what gives this magical drink its gorgeous color.Β The main active ingredient in turmeric is curcuminΒ which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that boost the immune system (weΒ are all looking for a little immune system support these days, right?!?). Unfortunately, turmeric is not very bioavailableΒ which meansΒ it's difficult for our bloodstream to absorb turmeric and reap the benefits.Β However,Β there are two ingredients thatΒ increase the bioavailabilityΒ ofΒ turmeric: black pepper and fat.

Black pepper contains an alkaloid calledΒ piperineΒ which enhances the bioavailability of many substances, including turmeric. Studies have shown that combining just a little black pepper with turmeric can boost blood levels ofΒ curcuminΒ by up to 2,000%!Β Β

Our second key ingredient is fat. Turmeric is fat-soluble so the presence of fat increases the solubility of curcumin. Combining turmeric with a healthy source of fatΒ (CBD oil and coconut oil)Β allows the curcumin to beΒ better absorbed into the bloodstream.Β

Why Drink Golden Milk?Β

Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for conditionsΒ such as breathing problems, joint pain, fatigue, digestive issues and more.Β But if you want some more solid research, there have beenΒ modernΒ scientific studiesΒ showing the benefits of turmeric. These studies have shown that turmeric may:

  • boost immunity,
  • improveΒ your mood,
  • help lull you to sleep,Β
  • ease achy joints, and
  • improve digestion and gut health.Β

CBD and Golden MilkΒ

Like turmeric, cannabis has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. In fact, evidence suggests that cannabis has been used as medicine for over 2,400 years!Β Β

Adding CBD oil to golden milk really brings this cup of goodness to the next level.Β During this time when we all need a little nudge to relax, I hope this CBD golden milk levels up your evening routine.Β

Recipe: CBD Golden Milk

Note:Β We used our 500mg CBD Oil for this recipe, butΒ any of our unflavored CBD oils will work just as well. We note below how much to use depending on which strength oil you have on hand. The recipe calls for 20mg/CBD per serving but you can use more or less depending on your desired dose.

  • Yield: 2 cupsΒ Β
  • 40Β mg of total CBDΒ
  • Serving Size: 1 cupΒ
  • CBD/serving: 20mgΒ

Ingredients:Β

  • 2Β cups light coconut milkΒ Β
  • 1Β tspΒ ground turmericΒ ORΒ 1Β tbspΒ of freshly grated turmericΒ
  • Β½Β tsp ground gingerΒ ORΒ Β½Β tsp ofΒ freshly grated gingerΒ
  • ΒΌΒ tsp ground cinnamon ORΒ 1 whole cinnamon stickΒ Β
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oilΒ
  • Pinch of ground black pepperΒ
  • Pinch of ground cardamomΒ
  • 1 Tbsp of maple syrupΒ (orΒ honeyΒ to taste)Β
  • 40mg of CBD

Instructions:Β

  1. In a small saucepan, add coconut milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon stick, coconut oil, black pepper,Β cardamom,Β and maple syrup.Β
  2. Whisk to combine and warm over medium heat. Heat until hot to the touch but not boiling, 4-5 minutes, whisking frequently.Β
  3. Turn off heat;Β add more sweetener or spices to taste.
  4. DivideΒ between two mugsΒ (leave the cinnamon stick behindΒ if added).Β Add theΒ desiredΒ amount of CBD into each mug and stir.Β Serve immediately.Β

RecipeΒ Notes:Β

  • Use a creamy, plant-based milk.Β My favorite is coconut milk from a can (I find itΒ creamier); I have also used almond and oat milks to switch things up.Β Β
  • If you can’t find turmeric root, powder is a great substituteΒ and will work just as well.Β
  • Living in Vermont, I always have maple syrup in my fridge but if honey is more your flavor, use it instead.Β Β
  • If you want to remove the freshly gratedΒ turmericΒ and ginger, strain while pouring into cups.Β
  • This recipe is best when fresh, but leftovers can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to three days and reheated on the stove or in the microwave.
